Hey there 😀

You are invited to take part in a research study examining how adult learners experience digital learning platforms, with a focus on motivation, engagement, and the influence of gamification features.

The aim of this study is to understand how different psychological needs, such as autonomy, competence, and relatedness, shape learners’ levels of engagement and their intentions to continue using the platform. Your responses will contribute to my thesis research and will help identify how digital learning environments can be designed to better support professional development.

What You Will Be Asked to Do

In the following sections, you will be presented with a series of statements about your learning experience on digital platforms. These items relate to:

  • - Autonomy (your sense of choice and freedom while learning)

  • - Competence (your feelings of capability, mastery, and progress)

  • - Relatedness (your connections with peers and your organisation)

  • - Behavioural, Emotional, and Cognitive Engagement

  • - Perceptions of Gamification (e.g., points, badges, progress bars, leaderboards)

  • - Motivation (e.g., career-related external drivers)

  • - Retention Intentions (your willingness to continue using the platform)

There are no right or wrong answers. Please answer honestly based on your personal experiences.

How to Respond

Most questions use a 1–5 scale, where:

  • 1 = Strongly Disagree

  • 5 = Strongly Agree

Some scales use frequency anchors (e.g., 1 = Never, 5 = Always). These are clearly indicated when they appear.

Your Privacy

This survey is anonymous. No personal or identifiable information will be collected. Your participation is voluntary, and you may withdraw at any time by closing the browser window.

Thank you for taking the time to contribute to this research.

NB: Please answer the following statements based on your experience with the digital learning platform you use most frequently for professional development. In all items, “this platform” refers to that platform. A digital learning platform refers to any online environment you use to learn or take courses—such as LinkedIn Learning, Udemy, Coursera, or your organisation’s internal learning management system (LMS).
