Dr. Ronald McNair was the first astronaut to play a musical instrument in space, but it wasn't a trumpet. He brought his saxophone aboard the Space Shuttle Challenger in February 1984 — the mission that made him the second Black man to visit space.

Unfortunately, he died at the age of 35 during the launch of the Space Shuttle Challenger in January 1986.
